Programme Aims & Characteristics

Biomedical engineering is recognized around the world as one of the fastest-growing areas of innovation. It covers a wide spectrum of applications such as devices that are used by health professionals in their diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative practices; implants that are placed in patients for their health maintenance; prostheses, orthoses and assistive devices that are used by people with special needs to facilitate their daily activities; and healthcare products and exercise equipment for general health promotion.

This developing global field requires professionals who understand both the health issues that motivate these technologies and the engineering solutions that they offer. It needs individuals with a solid foundation in both health sciences and engineering technologies.

Our BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Engineering programme prepares students for such a challenging career. They have opportunities to take subjects in both life sciences and engineering and to integrate these concepts in interdisciplinary applications to improve human health.

In addition to building on foundation knowledge through classes on campus, students also obtain practical learning through the industrial internship/clinical attachment (280 hours industrial internship for BME stream student and 560 hours clinical attachment for BME with P&O stream student). These internships/attachments offer good opportunities for students to put what they have learned into practice and accumulate work experience for their future careers. Internships/attachments take place in industries and hospitals, and some of our students can have overseas placements (eg. Canada, China, Czech Republic, Japan, Singapore, UK and USA).

Curriculum

The programme includes both academic studies and practical training in biomedical engineering.

Year 1 subjects such as Chemistry, Human Biology, Mathematics, and Physics provide students with foundation knowledge in engineering technology.

Year 2 subjects further establish students' foundation knowledge in related engineering areas such as bioelectronics, biomechanics, and computer programming. The programme has two streams: Biomedical Engineering (BME) and Biomedical Engineering with Prosthetics and Orthotics (BME with P&O). Each student can select one stream according to their interests and strengths. Indication of the stream will be requested at the end of Year 2.

Year 3 subjects further strengthen students' knowledge of biomedical engineering, give them the opportunity to combine biomedical and engineering aspects and develop their ability in critical inquiry and thinking. One unique feature of our programme is that students take the subject Biomedical Engineering Research and Design Studies for four consecutive semesters in Year 2 and Year 3, which gives them the opportunity to build an innovative medical device prototype. Students can start to take BME and P&O Electives on different topics according to their streams.

Year 4 includes advanced and applied biomedical engineering subjects and a Capstone Project. Students further take BME & P&O Electives according to their streams.

Biomedical engineering industrial internships/clinical attachments are arranged during the summer semester to broaden students' experience in the field.

Professional Recognition

The programme has been granted full accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

Students who complete the prosthetics or orthotics subjects offered in the programme are eligible to sit for the certification examination of the Hong Kong Society of Certified Prosthetist-Orthotists (HKSCPO). This programme has been accredited by the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) as a Category I professional programme.

Career Prospects

Professional Engineering Practice

Working in medical device industrial settings, hospitals, the government, medical device regulatory firms, or other biomedical institutions, graduates apply their knowledge in biomedical engineering. This includes clinical engineering, entrepreneurship, quality assurance and regulatory affairs, sales and marketing, and service engineering.

Professional Clinical Practice

Graduates work in hospitals and healthcare sectors, including prosthetists and orthotists, clinical and rehabilitation engineers and hospital scientific officers, and in healthcare product customer services.

Basic and Applied Research in Engineering, Biology, or Medicine

Graduates can conduct basic and applied research in university, hospital and industry.

Entrance Requirements

PolyU welcomes applications from qualified candidates from around the world. The following guidelines are for the reference of students who wish to seek admission to PolyU based on non-local qualifications. Qualifications that cannot be found below will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

GCE A-level / International A-level

GCE Advanced Level or International Advanced Level with passes in 3 AL, OR 2 AL and 2 AS, subjects 

(This is only the minimum eligibility criteria. Applicants who gain admission, typically, attain at least BBB in 3 AL subjects.)

International Baccalaureate (IB)

A minimum score of 24 with at least grade 4 in 2 Higher Level subjects

(This is only the minimum eligibility criteria. Applicants who gain admission, typically, attain a score of 30 or above, including bonus points.)

SAT Reasoning Test/ACT/Advanced Placement Test/SAT Subject Tests

A High School (Graduation) Diploma (non-Chinese curriculum) and any one of the following:

  • a total score of 1190 in the SAT Reasoning Test; or
  • an American College Test (ACT) composite score of 24;

and

  • grade 3 in two Advanced Placement (AP) subjects; or
  • a score of 600 in two SAT Subject Tests

[English language requirement is waived for those attaining a score of 590 or above in the Evidence-based Reading and Writing in the SAT]

Applicants with good results in the GCE A-level / International A-level or International Baccalaureate (IB) can be granted up to 25% credit transfer upon admission to the 4-year degree curriculum.

Other Information

Applicants attaining good results in science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and/or Physics) are preferred.
