The AIMST University medical programme is modern and innovative. It is modeled on the clinically integrated curriculum followed by major medical schools in the United Kingdom and also incorporates local requirements stipulated by the Malaysian Medical Council. The 5-year programme is conducted entirely within the State.

Programme Outline

Year 1

The first year programme features intergrated teaching of molecular and cellular basis of medicine society and health. Biostatistics and ethics in medicine coupled with a short interface with the hospital, students are to complete a Self Study Module, choosing from a selected list of subject-specific topics, or a non-assigned topic. Primary care interphase for 2 weeks

Year 2

Year 2 is dedicated to systems and is divided into 2 blocks – systems term 1 covering the cardiovascular, respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. Systems term 2 covers central nervous system, endocrine, reproductive system and renal system and haematology. Problem based learning (PBL) forms an integral part of the block. Clinical skill learning for various systems is is carried out in the hospital environment for 3 weeks, which constitutes the First Clinical Attachement. They are expected to complete the requisite Self Study Module of phase 1 before they progress into year 3.

Year 3

Year 3 covers Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Pediatrics, Forensic Medicine, Psychiatry and Orthopeadics. Year 3 also has a co-curricular module wherein students engage themselves in varied activities like sports, literary projects, ethics, environmental awareness etc and they are assessed.

Year 4

During these years of junior clerkship, students will be actively engaged in Problem Based Learning sessions, symposia, clinical classes and self-directed learning.

Year 5

Year 5 is designed as senior clerkship wherein the students will consolidate the knowledge gained in year 3 and 4. The students will revisit and strengthen the skills in all the four major areas: Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Orthopaedics, Phychiatry, Family medicine and Pediatrics. This phase is designed to further develop their personal and cognitive skills to prepare them for the pursuit of lifelong learning and adaptation to change, as well as to enhance their analytical and communication skills.
Towards this end, there is much student focus on Problem Solving Exercises (PSE)/Problem Based Learning, CME (continuing medical education) and group discussion / peer review. Students will learn the management aspects as well. Students also have to complete a final Self Study Module to meet the course requirement.

With the launching of the National Biotech Policy & Bionexus in April 2005, job opportunities in biotechnology are set to escalate continuosly. Graduates will have excellent career opportunities in areas as diverse as the agricultural, medical, pharmaceutical, environmental and the food and manufacturing industries such as in:

Financial Aid

The Student Affairs Division assists students in obtaining financial aid for their courses through a number of agencies. Students may apply for the National Higher Education Student Loan Scheme (Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional - PTPTN) upon enrolment to a degree programme at AIMST, provided they possess a minimum of three credits in their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).

AIMST offers students with excellent performance in the SPM discounts on tuition fees upon enrolment in our Foundation programmes. The discount rate is based on the number of A’s obtained and could be as high as 70% of their tuition fees.
