The mission of the School of Pharmacy is to provide contemporary pharmaceutical education that produces highly-skilled pharmacists who deliver quality pharmaceutical care to the people of Virginia and the nation. The program focuses on a strong foundation in the pharmaceutical sciences, curricular integration, provision of high-quality pharmaceutical care, lifelong learning, appropriate use of technology, and a vigorous research program. The School promotes and encourages the scholarly and professional development of students, faculty, and staff in a multicultural environment.
Following graduation, students have consistently scored above the national average on the pharmacy board exams. The School of Pharmacy is committed to maintaining the finest academic environment through faculty development, service-based learning, and scholarly activity. Professional Program Overview
The pharmacy program is based on the premise that the ultimate goal of pharmacy is to render pharmaceutical care (defined as the full range of skills, knowledge, abilities, and empathy integrated to provide appropriate medical services to patients). The curriculum emphasizes this concept by providing knowledge and practice in the areas of preventive medicine, primary care for the pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations.
The first three years of the professional curriculum are a mixture of didactics, laboratory, recitations, simulations, and practical experiences. Courses in basic pharmaceutical sciences (e.g., pharmaceutics, medicinal chemistry, and pharmacology) and the clinical sciences (e.g., pharmacotherapeutics, applied pharmacokinetics, and immunology) are taught using lecture, case studies, presentations, hands-on experience, and technology. Each student at the professional level has a laptop computer. Students are encouraged to use the technology offered by the computer to enhance their learning.
- The curriculum incorporates introductory and advanced pharmacy practice experiences.
- In order to participate in these experiential experiences, all students must undergo a background check and drug screening prior to the end of the P1 year and again during the spring semester of the P3 year.
- The P4 year is devoted to advanced practice experiences in a variety of clinical sites including clinics, and hospital pharmacies.
- Required advanced practice experiences include ambulatory care, internal medicine, community practice and institutional practice. Students select elective experiences from areas such as pediatrics, psychiatry, drug information, geriatrics, oncology, poison prevention and control, home health care and neonatology.
In addition to the basic University requirements, students admitted to the professional education program are expected to meet the following admissions criteria:
- Minimum overall GPA of 2.75 (inclusive of all colleges and/or universities attended).
- Complete all pre-requisite courses or equivalency (appropriately approved) with a grade of “C” (2.00) or better in each course.
- Submit the following: a University application with the required fee, School of Pharmacy application supplement, two letters of recommendation on required form, official transcripts from all institutions of higher education previously attended, and a written statement of professional goals. - Applicants whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if they have less than 30 transferable college credits.
- PCAT scores are due by February 1 of the year you plan to attend. Applicants must take the PCAT by November of the previous year to make the February 1 deadline.
The most competitive applicants will be invited for an interview. Completion of an application and meeting requirements does NOT guarantee an interview or admissions.
