Program Description

Exercise science is an interdisciplinary field focused on the study of maintaining and improving the health of patients and clients across the age spectrum. The Exercise Science for Health Professions Program is designed to prepare undergraduate students for entry into a wide variety of disciplines, particularly health professions graduate programs. 

The interdisciplinary nature of the program provides a variety of pathways for exercise science students after earning their undergraduate degree. Our curriculum places a high emphasis on comprehensive biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and anatomy courses, giving students the foundational knowledge required to excel at the graduate level in healthcare professions.

Students who major in exercise science for health professions can continue on to pursue careers as a(n):

  •  Occupational Therapist
  •  Physician Assistant
  •  Rehabilitation Specialist
  •  Sports Nutritionist ​

​​"3+" Programs

Master of Athletic Training in Five Years (3+2)

Students complete undergraduate courses during the first three years and begin the professional phase of the Athletic Training Program during the summer prior to the summer of their fourth year. Students will receive a bachelor of science degree at the end of the fourth year and a master of athletic training degree at the end of the fifth year. 

Doctor of Physical Therapy in Six Years (3+3)

Students complete undergraduate courses during the first three years and begin the professional phase of the physical therapy program during your fourth year. You will receive a bachelor’s degree at the end of your fourth year and a Doctor of Physical Therapy at the end of your sixth year.   

​​Early Assurance

This degree is part of the early assurance gateway program utilized by the Master of Athletic Training and the Doctor of Physical Therapy Programs. Incoming freshmen with strong GPAs and ACT or SAT scores, qualify to have their spots in these programs "saved" until they complete the first three years of the Exercise Science for Health Professions Program. The requirements to be considered for early assurance are below:

Master of Athletic Training in Five Years (3+2)

  •  Minimum GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale
  •  A composite score of 25 or higher on the ACT or 1220 or higher on the SAT.
  •  To learn more about the requirements for Master of Athletic Training early assurance.

Doctor of Physical Therapy in Six Years (3+3)

  •  Minimum GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale
  •  A composite score of 26 or higher on the ACT or 1760 or higher on the SAT.
  •  To learn more about the requirements for Doctor of Physical Therapy early assurance.

​Experiential Learning

Within the Exercise Science for Health Professions major, students are required to take courses dedicated to research and experiential learning in order to graduate. These experiences may include working with a University of Findlay faculty member on research and participating in laboratory coursework centered around exercise and sports science areas, including biomechanics and exercise physiology.

Bachelor’s Degree Requirements

A baccalaureate degree from the University is a structured program of study for at least 124 semester hours of credit which consists of CORE+ Curriculum for General Education and major requirements, and possibly elective courses depending on the student's course of study. Baccalaureate students may choose from multiple majors, minors, endorsements, and/or certificates. A baccalaureate course of study enables students to explore focused subject areas in considerable depth that correlate to diverse career and/or educational paths.
