Why this programme?

Does eating fatty fish make you smarter? Does chocolate cheer you up? Would you like to know how 'unnatural' E numbers are? And find out which eating habits keep us healthy and prevent disease? Then University College Venlo (UCV) is the programme for you. At UCV, you have the opportunity to focus on Food, Nutrition & Health in an interdisciplinary manner. At UCV you design your own curriculum by choosing from a broad range of courses from the social sciences (e.g. psychology, sociology, economics, health management, public health or law) and life sciences (e.g. biology, chemistry and informatics, physiology and genetics).

Problem- and Research-Based Learning

At UCV we value academic curiosity and personal contact. Our Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Research-Based Learning (RBL) settings stimulate active learning. With PBL and RBL, you deal with academic and practical problems that challenge you to formulate the questions you need to understand the problem. Combining work in small groups and individual research, you seek solutions to problems and get feedback to help you refine your answers. You are in control of your own education. A tutor is there to facilitate your learning. This format helps you retain information better, teaches you to think about problems independently and develops your interpersonal skills.

All teaching at UCV takes place in small groups with at the most 12 students. This small-scale setting encourages you to be active in class, gives you space to develop your ideas and ensures that you receive attention from tutors. RBL is aimed at actively developing your research skills. Skills training and projects will be research driven. And through our close ties to local industry, you can apply your knowledge and skills in professional contexts and will gain the practical experience employers are looking for.

Choosing your courses

The freedom to create your curriculum is exciting and motivating. It can also be a challenge. At the start of your studies, you get an academic advisor, who will help you to make choices that fit your interests, talents, and ambitions. Your advisor helps you with questions like:

  • What are my talents and interests and how can I translate these into a successful career?
  • Which courses will help me reach my goals?
  • Should I pursue other academic options, like an internship?
  • How should I prepare for a master’s programme? Or the labor market?

Our academic advisors will help you in everything that relates to your curriculum choices, course registrations, preparing for your future career, dealing with a disability and many more study-related issues.

MaRBLe honors programme

Through the Maastricht Research-Based Learning programme, MaRBLe for short, we offer talented third-year bachelor’s students the opportunity to conduct their own research project. You will be guided by experienced academic staff who will help you further develop your critical thinking and research skills. This will help prepare you for a career in scientific research or research positions in business.

Courses & curriculum

UCV has a unique curriculum that offers you the opportunity to study Food, Nutrition & Health in an interdisciplinary manner. Your curriculum consists of the courses you choose within your concentration, an academic core and a bit of general education in the form of courses you take outside of your concentration. The academic core consists of four mandatory courses that give you the fundamental knowledge each UCV student should have.

Concentration

At UCV, you can choose to focus on one of our two concentrations: Social Sciences or Life Sciences. Each concentration offers a wide variety of courses in different disciplines. The Social Sciences concentration lets you choose for example courses in psychology, sociology, economics, health management, public health or law. The Life Sciences concentration offers courses in biology, chemistry and informatics, physiology and genetics. You may also opt for an interdisciplinary concentration. You choose courses from both concentrations to create a truly broad profile.
