Program Description

Whether working in a hospital, the community, industry, schools, sport, public or private health settings, physiotherapists help people overcome physical difficulties by restoring movement and function to as near normal as possible. Physiotherapists are key members of the healthcare team working in a challenging and rewarding profession.

Our aim is to develop graduates with the values and skills to become innovative and problem-solving practitioners. You will develop a scientific outlook and deal with patients in a variety of settings; from neurorehabilitation to musculoskeletal to respiratory care and industry.

To develop the skills required in physiotherapy, you will practise on other students in your class. Your learning is also supported by visiting the clinical simulation lab, field trips, practice education placements and e-learning. You will also gain experience in an elective placement in the UK or abroad.

Students undertake at least 1000 hours of supervised practice placement experience throughout the programme. This comprises seven placements of 4 consecutive weeks, except for the first placement which is 3 weeks in duration.

All placements are undertaken within Scotland and are dependent on placement availability. Students usually travel daily to and from placement, however in some cases accommodation is required.

What you will study

Year 1

Human Movement: Anatomy & Examination/Biomechanics and Physical Activity, Fundamentals of Human Physiology, Foundations of Inter-professional Practice and Health Perspectives in Physiotherapy Practice.

Year 2

Neuromusculoskeletal Management, Cardiopulmonary Practice, Neurorehabilitation, Working in Inter-professional Teams, Methodology & Research for Effective Practice, Applied Physiology for Physiotherapy, Practice Education Placement.

Year 3

Practice Education Placements, Elective Placement, Lifespan, Activity, Fitness & Health, Enhancing Physiotherapy Practice and Teams in Inter-professional Practice.

Year 4

Honours Project, Leadership in Inter-professional Teams, Practice Education Placements.

Entry requirements

All entry requirements listed here should be used as a guide and represent the minimum required to be considered for entry. Applicants who are made a conditional offer of a place may be asked to achieve more than is stated.

Year 1

SQA Higher

AABBB including English and two Sciences. A third science must be achieved at a minimum of B at National 5.

A Level

AAB including one Science. English and two further Sciences must be achieved at a minimum of either B in GCSE, BB in GCSE Dual Award or B at AS Level. Please note General Studies is not accepted.

ILC Higher

H1 H2 H2 H3 H3 including English at ILC Honours level and 3 Sciences with at least 2 being at ILC Honours level.

IB Diploma

A score of 32 points overall with 6 points in Biology. A second Science is required.

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma

Applied Science or Pure Science DDD, plus GCSE English at C.


HND Sports Therapy, Sports and Exercise Science or Science-based HND with AA in the Graded Units This must be supported with 2 Highers at C, including English and a Science.

SWAP Access to Health and Biological Sciences at Clyde College with BBB. Applicants should demonstrate an understanding of the course and have relevant work/shadowing experience.

Additional requirements

Successful shortlisted applicants will be required to attend for a selection visit as part of the admissions process. These visits will take place in February and March 2018. Acceptance to this programme is subject to satisfactory Occupational Health Screening and PVG clearance.

International pathways

If you do not meet the English language requirements, you may be eligible for the English for University Study programme.

English language

Applicants whose first language is not English will normally be required to hold IELTS of overall 7.0 with 6.5 in each element or equivalent.

Other academic and vocational qualifications

Each application to GCU is considered on an individual basis. If you do not have the typical academic entry qualifications, but can demonstrate relevant work experience and/or credits from recognised professional bodies, you may be eligible to enter this course via the University's Recognition of Prior Learning scheme.

Fees and funding

  • RUK: £9250*
  • EU: £1820
  • International: £11,500

*Total tuition fees for RUK students completing a three or four-year degree are capped at £27,750. Specific fees are subject to confirmation by the Scottish Government and may change once confirmed.

Additional costs

In addition to course tuition fees, you may encounter additional costs during your time at University.

Students are expected to meet the costs of accommodation and travel involved in undertaking practice education placements. If you are eligible for SAAS support then you may also apply for travel and accommodation expenses for placement.

International student start dates

For new international students, orientation events start on 14 September 2018. This extra time is specifically designed to assist new international students in settling into the UK and GCU prior to the start of general student induction and teaching.

There will be a whole host of fun and informative activities taking place during this period, including campus and city tours, as well as welcome events where you can meet other international students.

Professional accreditation

On completion of the programme you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Assessment methods

We use a wide range of learning and teaching methods to ensure that you have both the necessary knowledge and understanding of business and management and a portfolio of intellectual and personal skills.

Each module on the programme uses its own learning, teaching and assessment strategy to achieve learning objectives. Assessment methods vary between modules and may include unseen examinations, class tests, essays, management reports, case studies, presentations, and group work.

Teaching methods

The learning and teaching methods we use to ensure that our programme is both vocationally relevant and academically challenging. Our approach is student-centred, practical, participative and relevant to the needs of employers.

We've moved away from the traditional teacher-centric learning to a more independent learning approach, where you are encouraged to develop critical thinking skills.
