An Associate of Science is a degree usually obtained from a community college. Students must complete 90 credits of general education classes, such as language, humanities and math, plus elective science courses determined by the student.
What is an Associate of Science? This category is very broad, and many scientific majors are available, ranging from lab sciences such as biology and chemistry to nursing, math, computers and veterinary medicine. Typically, a student will choose a major and follow a prescribed pathway until the degree is complete. In addition to general education requirements, students can expect to take classes in higher math, at least two lab science classes, statistics and electives.
Once a student earns an Associate of Science, he or she can continue on to a bachelor degree program at a university. The well-rounded education received at the associate level gives students working knowledge of the world around them, and helps them excel the workplace.
The cost of earning an Associate of Science varies from place to place. Most community colleges have tuition that is less expensive than universities. By attending a school that is close to home, many students are able to save a significant amount of money.
Jobs available to graduates of an Associate of Science program include being an electronics drafter, a computer network support specialist or a technician in aviation, geology or a medical specialty. Many careers are open to individuals who have an associate degree, and the salaries offered can be quite good. Some graduates choose to work in their chosen field for a while before continuing their education.
Many options exist for enrollment in an Associate of Science program. At some colleges, students have the option of taking classes in the day, evening or online.
