The Respiratory Therapist is a critical member of the health care delivery system, providing basic and critical care to patients suffering from disorders of the respiratory system. Graduation from the Respiratory Care Program at Santa Fe College qualifies the graduate to take all of the credentialing examinations offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care.

The healthcare field of Respiratory Therapy focuses on treating patients with cardiopulmonary (heart/lung) illnesses and breathing difficulties. Santa Fe College's Respiratory Care Program is fully accredited by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) and has an advanced practitioner, registered respiratory therapist (RRT) outcome goal. Graduates of the program currently boast a 100% pass rate on the National board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), entry level exam and a 90% pass rate for the Registry credentialing examination. The program has a near 100% job placement history and annual graduate/employer surveys indicate a high level of satisfaction.

The Respiratory Care profession is composed of certified and registered respiratory therapists, who provide assistance to persons experiencing respiratory difficulty. Respiratory Care professionals provide care ranging from simple respiratory care to complex life-saving techniques used in the critical care setting for patients of all ages. A Respiratory Care Therapist receives training in critical care and advanced life support. They are involved in direct patient care in the administration of various humidity and aerosol therapies, breathing treatments and invasive critical care techniques. Respiratory Care Therapists are involved in all aspects of Respiratory Care including newborn, emergency, diagnostics and chronic rehabilitation therapies.
