Transition and Embedding Professional Nursing Practice - Advanced Professional Development [Level HE7] part-time

The aim of this module is to assist new and experienced practitioners in the development of knowledge and skills to support professional practice. Key to this is their understanding of how to engage in life-long professional development and what strategies can be developed in order to maximize the impact of this. Successfully integrating into a new profession and maintaining the momentum of learning required to further the development of professional skills can be both challenging and daunting. With this in mind, the module will guide the students through the implementation, further development and evaluation of the skills they have already developed both during pre-registration education and their career so far.

Students will be required to engage in a critical discussion centred on the key topics covered within the module, with particular emphasis on its relationship to their own practice and the areas in which they are working. The module itself is split into four very broad blocks of study as follows: Learning from Practice, Inter-professional Working, Implementing the Nursing Policy/Agenda, and Patients Perceptions of Care.

Indicative content:

  • The challenge of working in a large and varied multidisciplinary team with overlapping scopes of professional practice and responsibility;
  • The recognition of the skills required by nurses in advocating for and safeguarding the interests of patients under their care;
  • The impact of national policies and guidelines on the delivery of care by front line staff, what role should nursing staff be taking;
  • The difficulties faced by new and experienced practitioners and how these can be best managed to ensure the development of positive strategies for professional learning;
  • How to maximize the effectiveness of work place learning strategies in order to ensure that and individuals practice and its supporting theory are kept up-to-date;
  • Implementation of the 6 C’s into practice and the attitudes and behaviours required by all staff in their implementation;
  • Exploration of how healthcare can be viewed differently by patients and the implications this may have of the delivery of services;
  • Critical look at the development and implementation of health provision and how this fits within the wider health economy;
  • The use of social media to enhance and share good practice within healthcare;
