An in-depth look at important issues and current debates in sexual reproductive health policy, including HIV and AIDS, towards more inclusive and rights-based approaches to sexual and reproductive health.
This course is tropEd accredited and is intended for public health professionals looking to elevate their capabilities in sexual and reproductive health. It can be followed as a stand-alone course or as part of the Master in International Health or Master in Public Health programmes.
Sexual and reproductive health includes a range of issues that affect the health of women and men at all stages in their lives. Driven by women’s and human rights movements, there has been a shift in the international arena from primarily focusing on population control and safe motherhood towards more inclusive and rights-based approaches to sexual and reproductive health.
In addition to maternal and neonatal, health, family planning and other aspects of reproductive health, sexual health is key. Both HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have a dramatic impact on the social and economic circumstances of both individuals and societies. Improvements in sexual and reproductive health require more than a biomedical response; effective responses focus to gender roles, identities, social norms, values and address deep taboos. These factors all contribute substantially to the type of interventions that health managers and professionals need to provide.
The module explores the causes, consequences and patterns of across a range of SRH issues: sexual health, family planning, infertility , antenatal, perinatal, postpartum health, newborn health, abortion, adolescent health, gender based violence and HIV.
The module also explores key considerations for SRHR and HIV policy and practice: such as gender; rights based approaches; sexuality; stigma and discrimination; and ethics. Participants will explore their own norms and values in relation to sexuality and the way these drive the problems and the response to the problems. Specific attention will be provided to groups that are not sufficiently reached by SRH services, such as adolescents and people with disabilities.
