Our pre-medicine internship programs
There’s no doubt about it: becoming a doctor is hard work. But if you’re ready for it, so are we! Our internships abroad let you shadow real-life doctors and gain first-hand clinical work experience. Along with global health tutorials, you’ll gain insight that will set you apart from the crowd when the time comes to apply to and interview for medical school. Shadowing doctors
A Gap Medics program is all about shadowing – being alongside carefully selected physicians and other health professionals as they go about their day-to-day work in hospitals. It’s the ultimate way to discover first hand what being a doctor is really like.
Your program is likely to include a variety of different shadowing settings, from watching surgical operations in theatre to ward rounds and outpatient clinics. If you’re looking for a general overview of life as a hospital doctor, we’ll place you in the departments we know will give you the best and most varied experience. We are also happy to take into consideration your specific interests, and we have opportunities in a huge range of departments including pediatrics, surgery, orthopedics, internal medicine, obstetrics, gynecology, urology, oncology, neurology, physiotherapy and radiography.

Your personal medical mentor
We believe strong mentoring is crucial to helping you understand what you see and get the most out of your hospital work experience placement. You’ll be assigned to a specific mentor – usually a doctor – who will provide clear day-to-day supervision and guidance in each of your placement departments.
We work very closely with our hospitals to make sure that every mentor is appropriately qualified, fully understands the aims of our program, and has a genuine desire to teach and inspire you. We also pay all mentors directly for each student they host, so they remain motivated and feel a real benefit from the program.
Medicine Mentor: Dr. Omar Kasuwi
Dr. Omar, a cardiology specialist and Director of the Sokoine Health Centre in Tanzania, has been mentoring Gap Medics students since May 2014.
Your day with Dr. Omar begins at 8:30 with his morning report, a 15-minute briefing for all clinical staff to discuss overnight patient developments and the caseload for the day ahead. From there, you’ll join him in the consulting room for his morning outpatient clinic.
Dr. Omar takes his role in developing the next generation of doctors seriously, and believes in students having as practical a role as possible without compromising safety. You’ll find yourself taking blood pressure and heart rates, measuring babies and learning to recognize specific conditions through a stethoscope. But this isn’t just for fun – Dr. Omar is well-known for his constant testing of students at every step to ensure the experience is sinking in.
Your Placement Coordinator
Your placement coordinator is the member of the local Gap Medics team who has a specific responsibility for your hospital placement. He or she will fully brief you on your first department at the Gap Medics house on Sunday night, show you to the hospital and personally introduce you to your first mentor on Monday morning.
Placement Coordinator: Maryla Baginska
Maryla grew up in the Polish city of Krakow, and has a fantastic knowledge of all things Warsaw having lived and worked there since graduating university in 2012.
Maryla looks after students in three of our largest departments at MSW Central Hospital in Warsaw – pediatrics, general surgery and obstetrics/gynecology. Her close friendships with our mentors in these departments help keep everyone smiling even on the busiest days, and she’s always ready to help and is never more than a phone call away should you need anything.
