This course aims to provide students with knowledge and critical understanding of the concepts and key issues related to Maternal and Neonatal Health (MNH) and Safe Motherhood. Students learn how to develop a strategic plan for the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality, and how to plan, organise, monitor & evaluate evidence-based MNH programmes and services, taking into consideration the importance of effective functioning health systems.

Course Outline

  • Causes and determinants of maternal and neonatal mortality and the global burden of maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity

  • Strategies for reducing maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity and the concepts

  • History and evolution of the Safe Mothethood Initiative, with particular emphasis on the key strategies: Skilled Attendance at Birth (SBA) and Emergency Obstetric Care (EOC)

  • Measuring maternal mortality

  • The role of health systems in support of MNH

  • Planning, organising, monitoring & evaluation of MNH programmes and services

  • Community and demand-side aspects of MNH

  • Quality assurance methods for MNH services

Academic requirements:

Anyone who works in the fields of international child health would find this course useful, especially doctors, nurses, midwives, community health practitioners and public health researchers.

English language requirements:

Proof of English to IELTS 6.5

Specific aims:

  • Plan evidence-based programmes and services for the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity and improvement of MNH
  • Discuss critically the causes and determinants of maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity and the global strategy for improvement of MNH from UN agencies
  • Critically evaluate MNH programmes and services and explain the limitations of methods for measuring maternal mortality
  • Demonstrate a detailed and critical understanding of the concepts, strategies and historical development of the Safe Motherhood Initiative
  • Introduce and use quality improvement methods for MNH services, notably setting of standards, carrying out maternal death reviews and criteria-based clinical audit
