Program Description

Master in High Performance Sport: Strength and Conditioning

UCAM Universidad Católica de Murcia

This Master’s degree is the first in Spain to be recognized by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). The curriculum has especially been designed to impart not only theoretical and practical applications in this specific field but also the methodological foundations necessary for students’ independent research, enabling them to assess the most controversial lines in Sports Science. Our teaching faculty is uniquely comprised of UCAM professors as well as national and international experts from the high-performance sports sector. Students will receive a deeper understanding of the different areas in sports performance and conditioning and acquire the necessary training for proper performance in their professional and/or research careers. The constant evolution and growing interest in physical activity and sports science make this area of multidisciplinary expertise a highly demanded subject of professional interest. Together with the official title of the Master’s, which allows students to directly access a Ph.D. program, students can also acquire official titles from the prestigious NSCA organization in the areas of Personal Trainer and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

High Performance Sports Centers

The Biomechanics Laboratory is located in UCAM's Research Center for High Performance Sport. The primary focus of the Biomechanics Laboratory is to examine the effects of different training modes on performance and fitness in both individual and team sports. Additionally, the laboratory allows the assessing of the biomechanical and physiological adaptations that occur in athletes and older adults based on changes in their exercise training protocols.

UCAM’s laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art technology facilitating the collection of data across various research projects. It includes two force platforms, a respiratory gas analyzer, isokinetic dynamometry features, dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry provisions, ultrasound, a 3-D motion capture system, as well as a facility for electromyography.

Several research projects are currently being funded by both government (Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, Consejo Superior de Deportes) and private agencies (Fundación Real Madrid). UCAM’s primary research study on “Strength and power-resisted training in football and athletics” is supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competition with an amount of 120.000€. The objective of the underlying investigation is to determine the optimal load for maximum acceleration gains with regards to the sled towing training method for competitive athletes.
