WHICH METHODS ARE EFFECTIVE TO HELP PEOPLE WITH ANXIETY DISORDERS, DEPRESSION OR TRAUMA SYMPTOMS? WHICH METHODS HELP PEOPLE TO EAT HEALTHIER OR QUIT SMOKING?
A great many people continue to suffer from mental health problems. These include depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress syndrome and grief. How can these problems be effectively studied and treated?
What role do mental health, physical and social factors play in the development of lifestyle-related health problems? And, above all, how can we use psychological insights to help people improve their health and prevent problems?
You will address these questions in the one-year Master's programme Clinical and Health Psychology. You will specialise in clinical psychology or health promotion.
Driven by research and clinical experience
The lecturers from this Master’s programme work in clinical practice, the practice of health promotion and/or do state-of-the-art theoretical or applied research at Utrecht University. This integration of science and practice feeds the teaching approach.
Learn to work in a multi/disciplinary way
Clinical and health psychology is always interacting with other disciplines due to the context in which behavioural and health problems arise. Examples are medicine, biology, neurology, pharmacology, economics, sociology and social psychology. This will therefore be a considerable focus of attention. Some lectures will also be taught by (guest) lecturers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. And finally, you will often work in a multi-disciplinary context during your internship as well.
The Clinical and Health Psychology Master’s programme will mainly be taught in English. It is possible however to follow your seminars in Dutch. Our programme’s content and context have a strong international character and you will have plenty of opportunity for international orientation (thesis, internship within the health promotion track, symposiums).
The NIP´s basic certificate in psycho-diagnostics
The clinical Master’s degree offers you the opportunity to acquire the NIP’s basic certificate in psycho-diagnostics (BAPD). You can also apply for different postgraduate programmes (Healthcare psychology; in Dutch: GZ-psycholoog) or pursue a doctoral degree.
Objective of the programme
This programme will enable you to develop into an academic professional. You have broad knowledge of contemporary scientific theories and instruments as well as skills related to prevention, psychotherapeutic treatment and policy formation in the area of psychological aspects of health, illness and psychopathology. You are familiar with research methods from mental healthcare or health promotion and can translate that knowledge to practice. You know what it’s like to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
