Liverpool School Of Tropical Medicine

This course aims to provide students with knowledge and critical understanding of the principal technical challenges encountered in supporting emergency humanitarian operations. It aims to enable students to adopt a reasoned and evidence-based approach to anticipating and identifying the technical challenges and to develop and evaluate strategies for their management.

Course Outline

Logistics, infrastructure and communication:

  • planning and managing the logistics chain of specification, ordering and procurement, transport, storage and distribution

  • tools for financial management and control

  • managing human resources for logistics and technical activities

  • contracts for staff, property and procurement

  • field communication equipment and their importance for security

  • logistics support of immunization programmes

  • provision and maintenance of accommodation and utilities

Environmental Health, Water and Sanitation:

  • common environmental and public health hazards

  • environmental health planning and management in emergencies

  • minimum standards for the delivery of relief in the environmental health sector

  • planning and managing effective sanitation programmes

  • planning, sourcing, treating and supplying water in emergencies

  • hygiene-promotion

  • key indicators for monitoring environmental health programs

  • environmental risk factors for vector-borne diseases in emergency situations

  • strategies for controlling vector-borne diseases

Academic requirements:

Any person working in international development and humanitarianism would benefit from attending this course.

English language requirements:

Proof of English to IELTS 6.5

Specific aims:

  • Develop evidence based strategies for effective water, sanitation and environmental health programmes in humanitarian emergencies
  • Review critically the available literature and summarise key points on technical aspects of humanitarian operations support
  • Plan logistics support for the management of humanitarian operations
