Course - Advanced Biomedicine

Umeå University welcomes qualified students from Brazil as part of the Science without Borders (Ciência sem Fronteiras) programme.

Science without Borders is a Brazilian Government scholarship programme which aims to send 100,000 Brazilians in overseas higher education institutions over the next four years to study in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and creative industries at universities across the world.

During the 2013 and 2014, higher education institutions in Sweden will welcome a total of over 2,000 Brazilian students.Seats will beavailable at the undergraduate and postgraduate (master) level.

The course package provides you with up-to-date knowledge in biomedicine and hands-on experience of experimental research. The course package provides an excellent basis for future academic studies in the medical area, for professional work in medical and pharmaceutical industry and for work within healthcare authorities.

The first part of Advanced Biomedicine consists of an advanced course based on four areas of excellence at Umeå University: infection, cancer, metabolic disease and neurobiology. All teachers are professional researchers and your studies will be based on topical scientific literature. In this course you will also be trained in bioinformatics, biostatistics, theory of knowledge and ethics.

The second part of your studies is dedicated to hands-on practical and theoretical training of modern biomedical and molecular biology techniques and their application in relevant medical research. The course Protein design and function focuses on recombinant DNA technology and isolation and characterization of proteins.

The course structure has emphasis on individual training to provide detailed knowledge in how to design experimental strategies and translate them into experiments. The teachers you’ll meet are leading scientists and you will continuously build your own scientific network. You will also be trained in documentation, evaluation of your results and to present your work in various scientific formats.

Special requirements

University education in one of the following fields; Biomedicine, Medicine, Dentistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry or Biomedical Laboratory Science, including:

  • 15 ECTS biochemistry or molecular biology

  • Practical experience of experimental/ laboratory work (equivalent to 30 ECTS-credits)
  • English: IELTS/TOEFL 6,0/80.
