What happens to our bodies when we drink alcohol? How does access to clean water affect health? If you’re interested in the scientific and social aspects of disease and disability, this certificate is for you. It integrates biological, chemical and physical sciences with psychology, health statistics and social sciences to investigate the underlying causes and solutions in a range of conditions – from pain and addiction to cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Educational aims

This certificate aims to provide a broad introduction to health sciences. Your studies will:

  • introduce you to a range of basic concepts, data and terminology relevant to the health sciences
  • expose you to different lines of evidence and key debates relating to topics in the health sciences
  • present health topics in their wider personal, cultural and social contexts
  • enable you to develop basic skills in: written and computer-based communication; information literacy using a variety of text-based, graphical, numerical and online sources; presenting and interpreting numerical data; and using a computer to support your learning
  • foster enthusiasm and confidence in studying the health sciences by providing a framework that will equip you with the study skills necessary for undergraduate OU level 1 study.

Fees

We believe cost shouldn’t be a barrier to achieving your potential. That’s why we work hard to keep the cost of study as low as possible and have a wide range of flexible ways to pay to help spread, or even reduce, the cost. Fees for study commencing in academic year 2014/2015 are:

  • Fees are paid on a module-by-module basis – you won't have to pay for the whole of your qualification upfront.
  • If like most OU students studying part time, you study an average of 60 credits a year – you’ll study for six years to complete a degree. Our typical fee for 60 credits is £2,632.
  • Our current fee is £5,264 – based on 120 credits of study – which is equivalent to a year's full-time study.
  • The total cost of your chosen qualification currently starts from £2,632 based on our current fees.

Career relevance

Employees with science qualifications are in demand in the jobs market, particularly if they also have good interpersonal skills and some workplace experience. While the Certificate in Health Sciences (S19) is not attached to any specific professional endorsement, it will be useful if you wish to take up a career in the broad area of health science, or if you work in this area already. It provides a broad base of subject knowledge and skills appropriate to occupations such as biomedical research, diagnostic services, health promotion, health and safety, health therapy, and health services administration and management.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements to study this qualification. You will however need to be proficient in English, to an IELTS standard of 6.0. If you are unsure you will be able to take a free English test as part of the registration process.
