Entry Requirements 1. Candidates shall have met the minimum University and School of Medicine entry requirements. 2. Candidates shall have obtained a mean grade of at least C+ at K.C.S.E. and passed the subject clusters indicated or 2 principal passes at A level or their equivalents: Alternative A Biology B Chemistry B Mathematics or Physics C+ English or Kiswahili B Alternative B Biological Sciences B+ Physical Sciences B+ Mathematics C+ English or Kiswahili B OR 3. Two principal passes in Biology and Chemistry and a subsidiary pass in Physics or Mathematics OR 4. These will comprise of lectures, practicals, rotations and clinical instruction, field courses and combined community health attachments where applicable. A unit shall be defined as 35 contact hours. Examinations Regulations The University and School Examination Regulations shall apply.The assessment of students' performance for every course shall be made up of Continuous Assessment Tests which will comprise of practicals, orals, assignments, written tests and any other mode prescribed by the School.There shall be end of course final examinations, which shall be marked out of 60%which will be distributed as follows: Final written 25% Practical/Clinical Component 25%,Orals 1 0 % . The distribution of marks for the final grade shall be as follows where applicable and shall be derived from continuous assessment tests and end of year examinations:Continuous Assessment Tests 40%,End of Year Examination 60%. The letter grades for the marks scored per course out of 100% shall be indicated as follows for inclusion in the Academic transcripts only: The letter grades for the marks scored per unit shall be indicated as follows for inclusion in the Academic transcript.(A) 75% -100% Distinction, (B) 65% to 74% Credits, (C) 50% to 64%Pass, (E) 49 and below(Fail).The pass mark for any course shall be 50%. In order to proceed to the following year of study, a candidate must pass in all examinable courses for the year of study.A candidate who fails with 40% to 49% in one of the courses offered in an academic year shall sit for a supplementary examination in the course.A candidate who obtains a final mark of between 47% and 49% in a particular course may be compensated according to the provisions for compensation as determined by the School.Compensation shall be possible but not compulsory. In addition, Saint Francis offers a multitude of tracks, allowing students to specialize their public health degree and receive either a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts. What is Public Health? Public Health begins with an undergraduate degree that prepares you to work with people to improve health, prevent disease and make a difference in their lives. It is a fast growing field with a wide variety of entry level jobs locally, nationally, and globally. What will I learn to do? You will learn to understand how people make decisions about their health and using that knowledge, you can support them in making healthy changes. You can also help people navigate the complex health system, answer questions about health insurances, design health programs, manage projects, and interpret and translate scientific information for the public. You will become an expert in identifying valid health data and effective programs, compiling and writing grants, making complex decisions, solving health-puzzles, and creating health education and marketing materials like movies, flyers, posters and more. Where can I get a job after graduation? Many organizations hire public health professionals, such as government organizations, universities, hospitals, doctor's offices, nonprofit organizations, or schools. As a public health professional, some of the many areas you can work in include maternal and child health, disaster response and preparedness, infectious disease investigation, research, environmental health, workplace safety, child abuse awareness and reduction, community health, etc. What if I already have a major? That’s great you already have a career path, but you may want to explore how a public health minor can set you apart from the competition. If your major is in another health science field, you may only need a few extra classes for the minor. If your major is in a program outside of health science, just five classes will give you a public health minor. Interested in pre-professional?
