Associate Degree in Health Sciences

You'll develop a unique range of skills and knowledge relevant to the health industry in one of this program's two streams, health promotion or health information management. The program includes an industry-based project ensuring that when you graduate you'll be work-ready.

In the health promotion stream, you'll learn to promote positive health outcomes to individuals and communities.

In the health information management stream, you'll learn how communications and information technology can enhance patient outcomes in the health system.

Specialised streams

The health promotion stream gives you the knowledge and skills to work with individuals and communities to improve health outcomes through education and other strategies, underpinned by analysis of the key determinants of health.

The health information management stream combines an understanding of health and the health system with skills in information management and information technology. It gives you the skills and knowledge to collect, store, analyse and distribute healthcare information.

Program structure

Year 1

You'll gain an understanding of the health care system in Australia, how it works and who the key stakeholders are. You'll get to know the biology of health through the study of biology, nutrition, anatomy and physiology. You'll also learn how to define or interpret what it means to be healthy and the determinants and psychology of health.

Year 2

You'll explore issues related to diseases and their management and the critical area of evidence-based practice in health. You'll select specialised electives associated with your chosen stream.

Program entry requirements

You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 or an equivalent senior secondary school qualification with a minimum average of 50%.

Equivalent qualifications may also include completion of the RMIT Foundation Studies program or a recognised post secondary diploma in the relevant discipline with the required grades.



English language requirements

To study this program you will need to complete one of the following English proficiency tests:

  • Academic IELTS overall band of 6.0 with no individual band below 5.5
  • TOEFL (Paper-based): minimum score of 550 (with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.0)
  • TOEFL (Internet-based): minimum score of 79 with a minimum of 19 in each section
  • Cambridge English (Advanced CAE): CAE Grade C
  • Pearson: Minimum score of 50 (no band less than 42).
